Olle Middle School once again demonstrated its leadership in academic competition by hosting the Fourteenth Annual Olle Owl Invitational Speech Tournament. The highly anticipated event brought together top middle school talent from across Texas and beyond, solidifying its reputation as one of the largest and most competitive tournaments of its kind in the nation.
This yearβs invitational welcomed 18 teams, including 15 from the Houston area and three traveling from outside the region. Returning programs from Austin, Victoria, Texas, and Palm Beach, Florida, highlighted the tournamentβs growing national reach, with some schools making their second and third consecutive appearances. The field included 11 public school teams, five private schools, and two speech and debate clubs, ensuring access for students whose campuses may not offer formal programs.
In total, 375 students competed across 660 entries, showcasing months of preparation and dedication. Since its founding in 2012 with just seven schools, the tournament has grown into a premier event on the middle school speech and debate circuit. Despite setbacksβincluding a cancellation in 2020 due to a water main break and pandemic-related disruptions that led to virtual competitions in 2021 and 2022βthe Olle Owl Invitational has continued to evolve and expand. Notably, two schools have remained committed participants every year since the tournamentβs inception.
Competitors took part in 24 events spanning speech and debate disciplines, including Congressional Debate, World Schools Debate, Original Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation, and Original Spoken Word Poetry. Over the course of two days, 255 rounds of competition were held, each reflecting the depth of preparation students began as early as August 2025. Judges frequently remarked on the exceptional quality of performances, often noting the difficulty in selecting winners due to the high level of talent on display.
Supporting an event of this scale required a strong network of volunteers. A total of 132 judges contributed their time and expertise, including high school speech and debate students, current and former faculty, alumni, and community members. High school volunteersβmany from Alief Independent School Districtβplayed a particularly vital role in evaluating technical events. Their dedication was evident, with several choosing to judge on Friday evening despite competing in their own tournaments the following day.
While Olle Middle School students did not compete due to the host schoolβs connection to many judges, they were far from absent. Instead, they took on critical operational roles, managing responsibilities often handled by adults at other tournaments. Their organization, accountability, and professionalism ensured the event ran smoothly from start to finish.
The level of competition was evident in the results, with 15 of the 18 participating schools earning placements. Among the standout performances were students from Alief ISD campuses. Albright Middle School earned fourth place among small teams, with multiple student groups placing in World Schools Debate, Readers Theatre, and Lip Sync. Students from O'Donnell Middle School also distinguished themselves as finalists in the Congressional debate.
Beyond the competition, the tournament atmosphere was electric. With hundreds of driven and passionate students gathered under one roof, the energy was constant and contagiousβfueling performances and creating an unforgettable experience for all involved.
A meaningful highlight of the event came during the awards ceremony, where two special honors were presented in memory of former Olle speech and debate team members. The Amber Bonner-Mackey Spirit Award recognized students who exemplified perseverance, positivity, and sportsmanship, while the Ernest M. Evans, II Individual Sweepstakes Award honored the top three competitors with the highest cumulative points. These awards served as powerful reminders of the programβs legacy and the values it instills.
Hosting the Olle Owl Invitational continues to be a source of pride for the school, its alumni, and the broader community. The event has elevated Olleβs standing within the speech and debate world, with visiting teams often praising it as one of the best-run tournaments they attend. It also creates opportunities for alumni to return and give back, reinforcing a strong sense of tradition and continuity for current students.
As part of its ongoing commitment to excellence, Alief Independent School District will host multiple speech and debate competitions throughout the year at both the middle and high school levels. These events reflect a broader mission to provide students with access to high-level competition while fostering critical thinking, communication skills, and confidence.
More than just a tournament, the Olle Owl Invitational represents the power of preparation, community, and student voice. It is a celebration of academic excellence and a testament to the lasting impact of speech and debate in shaping future leaders.
