Alief Alum Spotlight: Kanesha Jefferson

Kanesha Jefferson’s journey is rooted in resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to education. Originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, she moved to Houston in 2011 and became part of the Alief ISD community, attending O’Donnell Middle School and graduating from Hastings High School in 2016. Coming from a family of educators, she developed an early passion for teaching and helping students succeedβ€”a passion that continues to guide her work today.

During her time in Alief ISD, Kanesha found meaningful opportunities that shaped her personally and professionally. One of her most impactful experiences was joining Texas Executive Women (TEW). Through the program, she learned how to conduct herself in professional environments, practiced proper dining etiquette, participated in enriching field trips, met successful women across various careers, and even took part in a mock trial in a judge’s chambers. These experiences helped her build confidence, leadership skills, and a strong professional foundation that she still carries with her.

Kanesha’s inspiration to pursue a career in education began in seventh grade, during a challenging transition to a new city. A teacher named Mrs. Belcher took her under her wing, making sure she had the materials she needed and checking in on her well-being beyond academics. That care and dedication left a lasting impression and inspired Kanesha to become the kind of educator who supports students both academically and personally.

Today, Kanesha serves as a 7th Grade RLA teacher at Olle Middle School. She finds joy in giving back to the same community that helped shape her, inspiring students to develop a love for reading and critical thinking. Watching her students grow throughout the year is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work. For her, teaching is about making a positive impact on students’ academic journeys and personal development.

One lesson that continues to guide Kanesha comes from her principal at O’Donnell Middle School, Mrs. Saxton, who often said, β€œGood day or not, the choice is always yours.” This message taught her the importance of mindset and personal responsibility. In both her career and personal life, Kanesha embraces the power of choosing her attitude, especially when facing challenges, and uses this perspective to stay positive and focused while working with students.

Kanesha believes her work has a meaningful impact on the community because education lays the foundation for future success. By teaching literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills, she equips students with tools that will serve them throughout their lives. Beyond academics, she is intentional about creating a supportive environment where students feel valued, confident, and capable.

Outside of the classroom, Kanesha enjoys traveling and attending concerts. She often takes solo trips and goes to concerts on her own, embracing opportunities to explore new places, experience different cultures, and enjoy live music. These experiences provide her with both adventure and relaxation.

Her connection to Alief ISD remains strong through her daily investment in students. Many of them may not initially see life beyond Alief, so Kanesha makes it a priority to share her own experiences and expose them to new possibilities. By showing students what is achievable, she encourages them to dream big and broaden their perspectives.

For students considering a career in education, Kanesha emphasizes that teaching is more than a jobβ€”it’s a calling. She encourages future educators to lead with patience, empathy, and flexibility, to remain lifelong learners, and to never underestimate the impact their words and actions can have on students’ lives.

Kanesha defines success as being able to look in the mirror and feel proud of who she is. Success, to her, means giving her best effort, staying true to her values, and continuing to grow. She is proud of graduating from Texas Southern University, joining Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., pursuing graduate studies at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and returning to Alief to give back through teaching. On a personal level, she also takes pride in overcoming her initial fear of traveling alone and embracing solo travel with confidence.

Reflecting on her time in Alief ISD, Kanesha credits the district with helping her find her voice. Once a quiet child, she grew more confident through the support of teachers and a diverse, welcoming environment. This sense of self-expression and confidence now defines both who she is and the educator she strives to be.

Her message to current students, staff, and alumni is clear and powerful: never underestimate the power of your voice and your dreams. It’s not where you start, but the choices you make that matter most. Alief ISD is full of opportunities, and with determination, confidence, and hard work, anything is possible. Kanesha Jefferson stands as living proof that your background does not define your futureβ€”your effort and belief in yourself do.
